Community Speed Watch 2

Dear All,

As you may have seen in Waterhouse Moor, we have been doing a Community Speed Watch, with James Dickinson from Harlow Council's Community Safety Team and some of our member for the Resident's Association.

Our Second speed watch happen on Thursday 24th April 2013 from 15:00 - 16:30. We watched 140 cars use the road, the traffic has been fairly suitable for a school/working day and we have not caught anyone breaking the speed limit. (36 Mph stated by the scheme, but beware that the road is 30 Mph).

As we did a speed check last week with 80 cars, first of all I will show the result of our finding with the first 80 of this week cars as they can help us compare and analyse the data. Last week it took us 1 hour and 40 minutes but this week it us 45 minutes to observe 80 cars, which shows us how the school run and a working week can increase the usage of our road.

The speed (in Mph) we recorded for 80 cars were, 31, 23, 18, 31, 24, 22, 19, 19, 22, 31, 21, 24, 20, 30, 24, 19, 25, 18, 18, 13, 18, 23, 21, 22, 20, 18, 18, 26, 22, 30, 25, 28, 22, 20, 16, 18, 19, 12, 21, 24, 23, 24, 22, 27, 19, 22, 19, 23, 19, 20, 25, 20, 24, 23, 16, 20, 18, 19, 28, 15, 16, 21, 17, 20, 17, 27, 23, 22, 16, 24, 16, 16, 28, 30, 24, 23, 18, 23, 25, 31

The average speed we got was 21.725 Mph, so from this speed check on average, no one is breaking the speed limit, also the speed may be lower as it was school finishing time, so there was more congestion on the road and cars could see us from a far distant as we have to wear Hi-Vis jackets allowing them to slow down.

Once we had observed 80 cars, we had moved location towards the shop, where the path to goes down to Netteswell Pond, we observed a further 60 more cars for 44 minutes (15:46-16:30).

The speed (in Mph) we recorded for 60 further cars we observed were, 22, 26, 17, 16, 25, 28, 21, 35, 17, 23, 25, 24, 19, 27, 20, 23, 17, 18, 17, 25, 13, 26, 23, 31, 20, 25, 21, 25, 21, 15, 26, 20, 15, 26, 19, 12, 21, 26, 18, 23, 23, 25, 28, 19, 24, 23, 27, 24, 23, 15, 29, 34, 17, 21, 15, 18, 21, 21, 32, 29

The average speed we got for the 60 cars was 22.32 Mph, so from this speed check on average, no one is breaking the speed limit. If we were to put both result together, 140 cars in 1 hour 30 minutes, the average speed it 21.98 Mph, again the average is a below the legal speed limit on the road.

Over the next few weeks, we will continue to do Community Speed Watch to monitor the speed down Waterhouse Moor road, but we will be looking for other volunteers to help out, in order to make this exercise worthwhile. Furthermore, you may have seen the travel flow strips (Rumble Strips) on the Waterhouse Moor Road, this will be down for a week which will also help to measure speeds, vehicle weights and volume of traffic, this will also assist us to monitor speed down our road, and can be used as evidence for future traffic issues.

Thank you for Supporting Waterhouse Moor Residents’ Association.
